Place the carafe with the lid in the "half" open position into the coffee maker. When brewing is finished, remove carafe and close lid to prevent heat from escaping through the small brew opening. When you program the coffee maker to turn itself on automatically, set the time just 10 minutes before you actually want your coffee. That way you will be there when brewing is finished and you can close the lid.
